3. The Witch

Curse Of Chucky
A24

When it comes to Halloween viewing, we're all pretty accustomed to watching films that include boogeymen and ghosts doing their scary thing. That's been the norm for generations and it's because of these notions that The Witch will probably never be considered a must-watch around Halloween, but, if you're a true genre fan, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by skipping this one.

The tale of a Puritan family escaping the heretic trappings of village life and setting up home in the woods is a real slow burner. But once odd things start happening and whispers of witchcraft are afoot, the family, headed by an uber strict father (yes, that's Finchy from The Office), get themselves into a paranoid frenzy.

The result is a film very much heading to an unforgettable finale, where a culmination of expert storytelling from writer/director Robert Eggers, and a score that gets right under your finger nails, leave you feeling like you've witnessed something unique and scary to boot. You'd be lying if you say Black Phillip hasn't invaded your dreams since watching this.
