Not all horror movies need to be R-rated gore fests and no film proves this better than Goosebumps. Based on R L Stine’s popular nineties book series – those ones with the gooey, bubbly covers – and, to a degree, the TV show that followed, this incarnation goes all postmodern on us by pitting Stine against his own creations as they come to life and terrorise nowheresville, Delaware. The result is a movie that, above anything, is damn fun.

Director Rob Letterman's take on the series could have and probably should have failed, but, thanks to some spirited performances from Black and his teen compatriots, gorgeous CGI creations - The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena and some indestructible gnomes are standouts – as well as a wicked sense of humour, the film work perfectly. Forget feeling terrified or grossed out, this is the halloween flick familes will be watching together in years to come.
