14. Scream 4

Curse Of Chucky
Dimension Films

Genre maestro Wes Craven's last feature before passing away in 2015 was a return to the franchise that put him back on the map. The man's credential's will remain nontarnishable but, unsurprisingly, this fourth entry in the slasher series got a right old shiving by critics.

While a lot of criticism laid at Scream 4's shiny suburban door may ring true - it was clearly a money grab by studio execs - this was Craven's chance to have fun. Whereas the previous two sequels got bogged down with genre convention riffing and dredging up ghost(faces) from the past, this one cuts loose, with a bunch of new faces ripe for a stabbing being stalked by some even nastier movie-inspired killers.

Plus there's plenty of old characters in the mix to make this feel like one grim reunion.

Any Scream film will give you a belting Halloween evening, but this final entry is a seasonal must purely because it sees the franchise returning to its scary roots.
