12. We Are Still Here
A subtle and familiar setup - a grieving couple move into a desolate, New England house with a macabre past - soon turns into something grim and great in this little-seen effort from helmer Ted Geoghegan.
We've seen haunted house films in all kinds of guises, but like Ti West's breakout feature, House Of The Devil, We Are Still Here works so well because of Geoghegan's choice of period (1970s New England), setting (the central house, sitting atop cinema's scariest cellar, bar none) and a plot that veers from noises in the night, shadowy glimpses all the way to a seance that kicks off a frazzle-happy climax. When the film kicks into gear, you really feel it, along with a growing sense of dread.
Tonally, the We Are Still Here shifts at a speed that will have heads rolling into the basement, but if you want to feel a cold sense of dread and isolation come Halloween, this understated feature will accomplish just that.
