15 Recent Horrors You Should Avoid This Halloween

13. World War Z

The Thing 2011
Paramount Pictures

Brad Pitt versus zombies in the megabucks cinematic adaptation of Max Brooks's celebrated World War Z. As the very first two words of that sentence might suggest, the budget here runs more than a little too high, as a result diluting the film's scares and horror in favour of typical PG-13 action fare.

Not to mention discarding the book's clever conceit - more news report than narrative, if anything needed to be 'found footage', World War Z is it. And yet, the film isn't.

CGI zombies run riot around the world as Pitt races to uncover a cure. The pace is fast and it looks good enough, but if it's Halloween scares you're after, World War Z is a bust. You'd be much better off with 28 Days or Weeks later - or even Will Smith's I Am Legend.
