1. Cliff Booth - Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
From the trailers, many assumed that Once Upon a Time In Hollywood would be a largely happy-go-lucky flick centring around one of the most prominent eras in Hollywood history. As it delves into an exploration of the Manson Family murders of 1969, Tarantino's latest masterpiece turns into something of a black comedy at times.
Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, is a stunt double for actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and World War 2 veteran. In a fictional retelling of the Tate murders, Dalton lives next door to the house in which Tate and Sebring were murdered in, and Booth unintentionally meets many members of the Manson Family, beating one of them for slashing one of his tyres.
After a tour of Italy shooting a total of four movies, Dalton gets married, and thus can no longer afford Booth as his stunt-double. The two part ways on friendly terms, drinking together on their return to America.
The Manson Family, after being confronted outside Tate's house, decide to murder Dalton instead of Tate, but once they break in they are confronted by Booth, who kills two and injures the third attacker.
Cliff Booth is a brilliantly written and acted character throughout this re-imagining of history. Although he is generally amiable, the rumours that he murdered his ex-wife persist and are left open-ended, and this forms an intriguing and complex character.
