2. Benoit Blanc - Knives Out
Although Daniel Craig has played iconic characters before - they don't come much bigger than James Bond - it is his performance as private investigator Benoit Blanc that he truly makes his own.
Starring in the murder-mystery Knives Out, Daniel Craig's Blanc is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the murder of Harlan Thromeby, a crime novelist (go figure). The suspects include his family and workers in his house, with the prime suspect being his nurse, Marta, who is alleged to have caused him to overdose on morphine instead of administering him his usual medication.
Believing she had in fact killed Harlan, Marta sets out to hide evidence from Blanc, even being forced to flee the house with Harlan's eldest son, Ransom, when it is discovered that she is the sole benefactor to his will.
Whilst all this was going on, however, Blanc deduced the truth: Ransom had set up Marta to be the killer, meaning she could not claim any inheritance. After Ransom is tricked into confessing, he is hauled off by the police.
With a sequel in the pipework, fans are eager to explore more of Blanc's so far mysterious character. As a inspector more at home in the cosy-crime sub-genre, Daniel Craig is the standout performer in what is a stellar cast. Perfectly sharp and witty, Blanc exposes these one-percenters for the snobby, self-centred people they are, and fans can't get enough of it.
