7. Desmond Doss - Hacksaw Ridge

John Wick Keanu Reeves

Acting as a depiction of real world events and people, the biographical war drama Hacksaw Ridge focuses on American combat medic Desmond Doss and his heroism in the Battle of Okinawa against the Japanese.

Desmond Doss was highly religious, and as he was a strict Seventh-day Adventist, refused to carry any sort of firearm. Where war films have previously idolised the man who singlehandedly massacres entire legions of enemies, Hacksaw Ridge and Andrew Garfield do an amazing job in portraying the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

In a focus on his upbringing and enlistment, we follow Doss as he struggles with his beliefs against the requirement of the United States military, but following an endorsement from his father, who served his country in the First World War, Doss is given permission to travel to Japan without having to carry a weapon, much to the disdain of his commanding officers and infantry comrades.

Doss turns out to be the bravest of all.

Risking his life over and over, Desmond Doss trawls through the bloody battlefield alone in search for injured soldiers, both American and Japanese, and lowering them down to the rest of the 77th Infantry for medical treatment.

It is estimated that Desmond Doss saved 75 men during this battle, and in Andrew Garfield's best performance to date, Doss cemented his place in Hollywood history.
