15 Recent Performances That Were Criminally Underrated

4. Ana De Armas In Knives Out

Knives Out isn't an incredibly serious film. It is, for the most part, a comedy. However, Ana de Armas' performance as Marta Cabrera, the immigrant in-home nurse of Harlan Thrombey, is the emotional core of the film. It takes a lot to make the audience love a mostly serious character among an otherwise comedic cast, but de Armas succeeds completely.

While her character has some comedic elements, she is easily the most normal person in the film. Yet still, she manages to also be the most intriguing. This film takes her on a rollercoaster of emotion with extreme highs and lows thrown at her nonstop, and you empathize with her the entire way.

Although the film would still be funny, the story overall would not succeed at all without de Armas selling the emotional beats. However, due to the outlandish nature of the rest of the cast, her portrayal of Marta has been mostly ignored in comparison to other characters such as Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc or Chris Evans' Ransom Drysdale.
