Following the fall of the Berlin wall spies were considered an irrelevance as Bond producers scrambled to modernise their secret agent. Worried audiences would feel the same they ratcheted up the cool factor by swapping out a perfectly decent theme tune from a Grammy award-winner that would sit comfortably on any of the previous Bond soundtracks for... An equally good song from Sheryl Crow. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with either, the dropped song was written by David Arnold, but Lang's timeless effort is miles closer to what die-hard fans would expect. It's a signature tune by anyone's standards. But then again who was selling more records in 1997, KD Lang or Sheryl Crow? Eventually KD Lang's version repackaged a Surrender and used later in Tomorrow Never Dies, a movie which rejected more songs for its soundtrack than Bond has had fast cars...
