13. The Pet Shop Boys "This Must Be The Place..."
https://youtu.be/YUJFdeJrU04 In the 80s, 007 lurched from debonair old man with an attache case full of cheesy gags to intense ladykiller who was more Shakespeare than secret agent. The warning signs were already there. Softly sung ballads had become the staple sound of Roger Moore's record-breaking 22-year spell as James Bond and when producers chose Duran Duran for his final film A View to a Kill, it was clear that change was on the cards. For The Living Daylights Timothy Dalton's first outing as Bond was eventually accompanied by Norwegian pop band A-ha but the Pet Shop Boys were originally booked for the gig. Yes, the UK synth kings had already recorded the most eagerly-awaited song of the 80s yet it never came to be. Some might say the track is empty and has no hook, but chuck in some French horns and anything is possible. Anecdotal evidence suggests John Barry wasn't happy with the last-minute switch because he and A-ha didn't get on. Luckily the rejected effort from the Pet Shop Boys didn't go to waste. It became This Must Be the Place I've Waited Years to Leave, a track on their 1990 album, Behaviour. Rolls off the tongue like a brick, that does.
