12. Anthony Newley's "Goldfinger"
https://youtu.be/1pyJd_rFrlo Meet the man who wrote Goldfinger. Along with Leslie Bricusse Anthony Newley wrote for The Rat Pack, penned the song Feeling Good which was later made famous by Nina Simone (later Michael Buble and Muse) and the soundtrack to Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory which earned him an Academy award nomination. Yep, he did the Oompa Loompa song too. They also came up with the words for perhaps the most distinctive Bond theme of all-time after singing "Goldfinger" to the Henry Mancini song, Moon River. Luckily that approach was ditched in favour of something more menacing and gritty. Presumably that's why the vocals in Newley's quirky demo version were never used. One listen and you'll agree that it belongs in a Halloween comedy, not an epic spy thriller. The familiar use of brass and metal instruments can still be heard but it's hard not to compare it to the finished version we know and love. Shirley Bassey owned Goldfinger but she had Anthony Newley's narrative and John Barry's arrangement to thank for her epic Bond debut.
