Back in 1997, Paul Verhoeven made a truly great, truly misunderstood sci-fi classic, which in turn inspired a series of sequels that absolutely nobody should ever watch, pretty much. The original was smart and subversive, a sort of Scream for sci-fi fans with its affectionate homage to B-movies and it doesn't need a remake at all.

Naturally, that means it's getting one anyway. It's been in production for years now and recently talk has turned to a new TV show with the original cast, which would be great. But in the process of announcing that, original screenwriter Ed Neumeier mentioned that the movie remake is also still in the works and that it would be closer to Robert A. Heinlein's source material:

”I’m not sure, their idea is as I understood at a certain point was they said to kind of do An Officer and The Gentleman, Johnny Rico as the Officer and The Gentlemen version of a sci-fi movie. So, maybe you could do that a romantic picture about kids coming up together in the service and one of them becoming an officer and all of that means, you know. It’s really not what Heinlein’s about, but that’s okay I can imagine you could do that. I’m not sure who goes to see that movie though.”

Let's hope he's wrong about that, to be honest.
