15 Sad Movies To Netflix And Cry To

11. The Pianist

The Pianist Adrien Brody

The Pianist could well be the saddest film on Netflix - proceed with caution. Set during World War II, The Pianist is based on the memoirs of Władysław Szpilman. Szpilman was a Polish-Jewish pianist and survivor of the Holocaust. The film recounts his story of survival during one of the greatest atrocities in human history.

Upon its release in 2002, The Pianist was met with great critical acclaim - both on the film festival circuit and during awards season. It went on to take home 3 Academy Awards including best director, best adapted-screenplay, and best actor - deservedly so.

The Pianist is a difficult watch. It's hard to imagine what living through these events must've been like but The Pianist makes every attempt to show you. It's an important reminder of why the past must never be repeated. The Pianist may be a difficult watch, but it's an extremely important one.
