There are likely to be very few people that haven't yet seen Damien Chazelle's much praised, La La Land. Released to critical acclaim in 2016, La La Land follows Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) as they attempt to follow their dreams in the city of angels. They soon discover that things aren't quite as easy as they'd hoped.

For the most part, La La Land is a happy film. You can't help but smile at the gorgeous LA sunshine, that "I can make it" attitude, and Justin Hurwitz's dreamy score - which has probably been stuck in your head for the past 4 years. That being said, La La Land made this list so it can't all be sunshine.

La La Land highlights the honest but harsh reality that you can't have it all. Achieving your dreams can require great sacrifice and Mia and Sebastian experience that first hand. Chazelle then continues to break your heart by ending the film on a wistful 'what-if' sequence that will have you crying for days.
