15 Stephen King Movies: Ranked From Worst To Best

13. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Maximum Overdrive Stephen King A comet passes over the earth and turns machines into sentient killers. So stay away from that egg whisk or you will die! A bunch of people hole up in a truck stop diner to avoid the rampaging machines. Some people leave the diner to make their own way to safety and of course they are killed. The rest of the diner folk have to team together to get the heck out of there and avoid death. Okay, so its not Citizen Kane, but Maximum Overdrive is a pleasing, cheesy B Movie that will make you laugh our head off at the corny dialogue and all the far out action. Written and directed by Stephen King himself (based on a short story he wrote called Trucks) - the Kingster said the film was a 'moron movie' and vowed never to direct another movie again. I think he was being unnecessarily hard on himself - and the critics were far too hard on him as well. With its blazing AC/DC soundtrack and machine based tomfoolery, Maximum Overdrive is a classic 80s horror movie and deserves a critical renaissance.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
