When was the last time we had a truly great shark movie? Okay, so we've seen no shortage of sharks in recent years, but for too long now they've been monopolised by mentally-challenged, low budget SyFy TV movies like Megashark Vs Giant Octopus, Sharktopus, and most notoriously the Sharknado movies. It seems like forever since we were given reason to be truly afraid of going back in the water - and The Shallows looks just the movie to get that job done.

Pitched as 127 Hours with a shark, The Shallows centres on Blake Lively as a lone surfer who gets trapped 200 yards from the shore when a hungry great white comes along. Done right, this could prove a real career turning point for the actress, who hasn't had much chance to really show us what she's made of to date; and director Jaume Collet-Sera (Orphan, Run All Night) has already proved he's a dab hand at thrills and suspense.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
