15 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined James Bond For Everyone

6. Bond...In Space (Moonraker)

One of the more cynical movies in the Bond series (and easily the most ridiculous), Moonraker was conceived in the wake of the Star Wars-fueled obsession with science-fiction movies, and follows the maxim that any major franchise jettisoned into space will majorly reek of desperation. Though the movie has plenty of absurd elements outside of the space narrative (the gondola that turns into a car, a Bond girl called Holly Goodhead, and Jaws falling in love with a waifish woman), things truly take a turn for the worse once Bond leaves Earth. Drax's plan is one of the more absurd in the history of Bond, to exterminate all life on Earth with a nerve gas, and then return to Earth to rule as a God alongside a number of genetically "perfect" couples he took into space with him, to repopulate the world in his image. Then Jaws turns good, then there's a ridiculous laser battle sequence that truly has to be seen to be believed, and one suddenly realises that, despite having three-times the budget of Star Wars (which was released just two years prior), Moonraker's space visuals are absolutely awful. It's an easy target to mock, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to: Bond in space is good for some perverse laughs, but it's another instance of excess that just doesn't wash.
