The Bad
Oh, Warcraft: mooted as the one to end the curse of the video game film, the reality was painfully contrary.
After a seriously impressive one-two of Moon and Source Code, Duncan Jones' adaptation of the wildly popular online game was an exciting prospect. Much more exciting than it should have been in hindsight.
Stitched together from other fantasy cliches, Warcraft failed on pretty much every level. Except the CGI, that was alright. Other than that the film is confusing, overlong and features the most lifeless human characters since Cars.
How It Improves Moon
Witnessing something so uninspiring, one cannot help but look back on the promising director's first feature; Moon.
Everyone needs to see Moon: it is a stunning representation with what can be done with limited locations, limited characters and a limited budget. Instead of the shallow nonsense we get in Warcraft, Moon offers up one of the most in-depth character studies in recent memory.
Moon is a slow, meditative vastly interesting piece of sci-fi cinematic art that came out of nowhere from a first time director and included a performance for Sam Rockwell yet matched. It plays with science fiction tropes, toys with our expectations and delivers in every element from the visuals to the haunting score by Clint Mansell.
Seriously, you could never stop saying enough good things about Moon. The only bad thing you can now say is that its director also made Warcraft...
