15 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics

8. John Carter

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 51% Why It Sucks: Andrew Stanton's ambitious $250 million sci-fi adventure flick is one of the most infamous box office bombs in recent memory, a tentpole film that just didn't connect with audiences at large due to its dull characters, incomprehensible story and, well, having Taylor "Box Office Poison" Kitsch in the lead role. A mixture of vastly superior adventure films with no real identity of its own, John Carter may have looked good, but it was widely torn apart for being boring and lacking the sense of wonder of many similar, more successful efforts. Why It'll Become A Cult Classic: That said, John Carter does have a rather loyal quarter of supporters who insist that the movie is merely a victim of expectations it never had any chance of living up to. On its own terms, it's a visually stunning effort for sure, such that many have fallen in love with Edgar Rice Burroughs' world brought to the screen, namely the bizarre characters and vast locales. To the movie's defenders, it's a tragedy that they'll never get to see a sequel to the universe that Stanton spent so much money building.
