15 Things That Almost Completely Changed The Hobbit Trilogy

3. Del Toro Wanted To Use Animatronics

Having developed the perfect mix of animatronics and CGI for his Hellboy films, Del Toro had planned to adopt the same approach for the Hobbit films. In all honesty, it would have been a lot better to have some animatronics in place of some of the more dodgy CGI - though of course it wouldn't exactly have helped the issues with completely CGIed characters - and you get the sense that Del Toro would have gone with more practical effects. And that would have been a good thing. As it was Jackson's trilogy relied a little too heavily on pure CGI - particularly in character rendering - and the audience were left watching that now too familiar rag-doll effect that tends to come with such manipulated sequences. Instead, we could have had a world populated with Del Toro's wonderful Hellboy creatures.
