15 Things That Almost Completely Changed The Hobbit Trilogy
15. Guillhermo Del Toro Almost Directed It
Early on in the production of the films Peter Jackson was only in a production role, with Guillermo Del Toro set to direct: the pair had been due to make a Halo film and stayed in touch when that inevitably failed. His vision would have seen more of a fairy tale tone, and the adaptation only of things available in the original text, and his experience working with fantastical movies like Hellboy would have fed well into his vision. He also admitted that he would have changed designs like the Goblins, Wargs and giant spiders. Had Del Toro continued with the gig, Peter Jackson may well have served as his Second Unit Director, putting Andy Serkis out of his secondary job on the production before he'd even started. As it was, Gollum got to branch out.
