15 Things In Harry Potter That Don't Make Sense
7. The Thestrals
Death has played a big part in Harry Potter's life. His parents died when he was a baby, he witnessed one of his teacher's perish (at his own hand no less) in his first year at Hogwarts, and he watched Cedric die during the Triwizard Cup. Not to mention the crushing deaths of Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore.
Why then, could Harry not see the Thestrals that pull the carriages at Hogwarts until Order of the Phoenix? Luna Lovegood explains that these creatures can be seen only by those who have seen death, so surely Harry should have been able to see them straight away?
J.K Rowling has since taken to Twitter to correct Luna, specifying that one has to understand and process death to be able to see the fantastic beasts. This however, feels like mere backtracking, because if that was the case, why wouldn't Luna have said it in the first place?
Even so, this may have explained why he wouldn't have seen them after his mother's death, but by the time Professor Quirrell dies Harry is surely old enough to understand the concept of death. With some of the brand new magical concepts J.K Rowling has brought to life, they have to be explained fully on screen for them to work. You can't expect people to have to do any required extra reading on Twitter and Pottermore to understand what happens in the movies.
