15 Things In Harry Potter That Don't Make Sense
8. Why Did Ron Have To Be A Knight?
After Harry, Ron, and Hermione navigate the first three obstacles blocking the path to the Philosopher's Stone, using Hagrid's knowledge of Fluffy, Hermione's knowledge of Herbology, and Harry's skill on a broom, wizard's chess was Ron's time to shine.
It is established earlier in the movie that Ron is something of a talented chess player, so naturally this is where he took charge. Directing Harry and Hermione to take their places on the board, Ron decides that he will become a knight, mounting the giant piece and beginning the game.
But why exactly did he climb on top of the magical knight? He knows how 'barbaric' wizard's chess can be, and when super-sized to this level, it could have been life threatening. Instead of taking such a dumb risk, why couldn't he simply direct the pieces from the sidelines?
This would have prevented him inevitably being attacked, getting hurt, and being unable to continue. Sure, Harry says that it has to be him to continue on, but with Ron next to him, and Hermione since she wouldn't have had to stay behind to look after Ron, surely three would have been better than one against the intruder they believed to be Snape?
