5. When Harry And Sally Improvised

Part of the tangible chemistry between Harry and Sally, and all other cast members, came from a lot of the dialogue and scenes being improvised right on set.

For example, the museum scene, where Billy ad-libbed the line “but I would be proud to partake of your pecan pie”. You can see Meg look to her side and laugh, where an unseen Rob Reiner silently prompted her to go with it.

The entire Pictionary scene was improvised too as a way of creating authenticity and more spontaneous laughs. In Harry’s new years speech, Crystal added certain lines into it which weren’t in the original script, one being – “I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts”.

Additionally, the final segment on Harry and Sally’s story was entirely extemporized.
