6. Irreversible (2002)

A film told in a reverse, non linear way, I will describe the events of the film in chronological order to make things easier to understand. Marcus and Alex are lovers. They are lying in bed when Alex tells Marcus she may be pregnant. A test later confirms this. That night they go to a party where Marcus acts like a complete prick. Alex walks out and goes to take the subway home. She comes across a vicious pimp called Le Tenia (The Tape Worm) beating the life out of a transexual prostitute. For some reason Le Tenia starts on Alex and viciously beats and sodomises her in scenes that are virtually unwatchable. Marcus and his friend Pierre see Alex being carted away in an ambulance and they vow to catch Alex's assailant. This brings them into the seedy underbelly of French homosexual sex clubs. In a case of mistaken identity, Pierre batters the life out of a man he thinks is Le Tenia but he has got the wrong man. It is up to the Butcher from Noé's Seul Contre Tous to impart the final words. Irreversible just looks nasty the whole way through the film due to the camera techniques employed by Noé. The lighting, the use of colour that Noé utilises to bring to life the gay BDSM scene, leaves us with an ugly, depraved atmosphere where very disgusting things go on. The two most depraved scenes - one in which Le Tenia sodomises and brutalises Alex and the other in which Pierre bludgeons a man to death with a fire extinguisher - are very shocking acts of violence. The non linear narrative actually adds to the depravity of the movie and the shock factor. The soundtrack will also make you feel dizzy and nauseous.
