15 Times The BAFTAs Corrected Huge Oscar Mistakes

10. The Power Of The Dog Wins Best Picture Over CODA - 2022

One interesting trend with the BAFTAs is that the BAFTAs and the Oscars often pick different Best Picture winners, and weirdly enough, the BAFTAs sometimes make a better choice than the Oscars do. Not always (as Atonement winning over No Country for Old Men in 2008 shows), but it's happened quite a few times.

Case in point: The Power of the Dog, which managed to scoop the Best Film award at last year's BAFTA ceremony. Unfortunately, despite receiving 12 Oscar nominations, it only won Best Director at that ceremony, while the big gong ultimately went to CODA.

CODA is a good film, but it's not a great one, and it was a simply laughable choice for Best Picture. It's hard to believe that an entire voting body considered a well-executed but straightforward, forgettable feel-good movie over something as artistically accomplished, powerful and consummately acted as Power of the Dog (and CODA was worse than at least five of the other nominees too).

In this case, the BAFTAs chose the right winner and, given the backlash CODA faced immediately after winning Best Picture, it's likely time will be far, far kinder to this original frontrunner.
