15 Totally Flawless Movie Monologues

8. I've Been Standing With You! - Fences (2016)

No Country For Old Men Tommy Lee Jones
Paramount Pictures

Denzel Washington's searing adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, Fences is a film rife with incredible monologues from its lead stars. The best of them all, though, comes from Rose (Viola Davis), the embattled wife of Troy (Washington).

Throughout the film, we learn that Troy grew up in an abusive household and was a gifted baseball player, but couldn't sustain a career because of the sport's racial divide; he later turned to robbery and has spent his life making money to keep a roof over his family's head.

Troy's character is the guiding force of the story, bitter about his failings and the thoughts of what could have been. He is emotionally cruel to his son and, in his unhappiness, instigates an affair with another woman, whom he impregnates.

After admitting his infidelity to Rose, she snaps and tells him he's not the only one who's unhappy in his life, and that she sacrificed just as much as he did during their marriage.

In the very definition of an Oscar-winning moment, Viola Davis steals the show, and her monologue remains the single most powerful scene of the film - which is saying a lot.
