7. Melting Nazis - Raiders Of The Last Ark

Hey, who wouldn't want to see a Nazi get his face melted off, right? Some of history's greatest monsters, a lot people would take pleasure in seeing them ridiculed or tortured on screen (the success of Inglorious Bastards would seem to confirm this). Well, as cool as the face melting sounds in principle, the finished effect in Raiders Of The Lost Ark is actually pretty traumatising in reality. This is down to the remarkably good special effects on display in the short sequence. The Raiders team achieved the effect by exposing a gelatine and plaster model of the actor's head to heat and then undercranking the camera. It is beautiful in its simplicity, up there with the exploding heads in Scanners.
