The Pitch: A survival film based on the true story of the USS Indianapolis, the ship that delivered the atomic weapons which effectively ended World War II. After doing so, the Indianapolis became stranded in the Philippine Sea for five days, with the crew desperately attempting to survive against the elements, led by the steely Captain Charles McVay (Nicolas Cage). Why It Could Score 0%: Even though there's a fascinating true story to be told here, it just seems unlikely that Mario Van Peebles is the director to tell it, because he's directed only two critically Fresh movies over his 25-year filmmaking career, and the last one was over a decade ago. Plus, it's not exactly like Cage is in his share of critically lauded movies these days, and it's hard to escape the feeling that this one probably belongs alongside his other straight-to-video offerings, especially considering that the budget is just $40 million for such a high-concept movie.
