The Original Movie: The third film in Richard Linklater's terrific trilogy sees Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) now living in Greece, and with two twin daughters in tow, life is proving to be more challenging than ever. The Ripoff: Set in France in the mid-1970s, this Angelina Jolie written-and-directed effort sees Vanessa (Jolie), an ex-dancer, and her writer husband Roland (Brad Pitt) visiting a sea-side town in which the couple seek to fix their slowly-drifting marriage, with the help of some eccentric locals. Though By the Sea is as of yet sight-unseen, it seems like it's going to follow a similarly relaxed, character-driven vibe to Linklater's movie, complete with a visually lavish, quaint European setting, filled with compelling supporting characters. The crux of Before Midnight is whether or not Jesse and Celine will be able to stay together through adversity, and it seems like much the same will be true of Jolie and Pitt's movie, though the stratospheric star power should ensure it a much healthier box office than Linklater's more niche fanbase allows.
