Why It Should Suck: Despite having a ton of creepy potential, 2014's original movie was nothing more than a missed opportunity, leaning back on generic "scares" and dull characters. Still, it made over $250 million on a $6.5 million budget, which is the sole reason this sequel exists.
Why It Might Be Awesome: It's right to be skeptical of this tangential follow-up written by original movie's scribe, Gary Dauberman, but in swapping out the first film's director John R. Leonetti (the genius behind Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) for promising up-and-comer David F. Sandberg (this summer's sleeper hit Lights Out), the thrills might feel a little more visceral and intense.
It's probably best to still keep your expectations in check regarding the narrative, but as James Wan has proven with the Conjuring series, familiar material can still deliver unbridled terror in the right hands.
