15 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome

2. Venom

Tom Hardy Venom
Sony/IGN

Release Date: October 5

Why It Should Suck: So. Many. Reasons. Director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) hasn't made a good movie in almost a decade, it's being written by screenwriters responsible for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Dark Tower, Kangaroo Jack and Fifty Shades of Grey, Tom Hardy's accent is hilariously unconvincing, and the attempt to make Venom into an anti-hero seems rather forced.

That's to say nothing of Riz Ahmed's boring-looking villain, Jenny Slate's infuriating mispronunciation of the word "symbiote", and the probability that the titular supervillain won't even appear much in his full form.

Why It Might Be Awesome: As uninspired as that first trailer was, Tom Hardy signed onto this project for a reason, and with rumours swirling that Woody Harrelson will also appear as Carnage, it's looking like Fox may be playing coy about the movie's true direction.

Furthermore, the actual Venom design looks great - complete with what sounds like Lance Reddick's bada** voice - and with rumours that Tom Holland appeared on the movie's set, could Sony have worked out a deal with Marvel Studios to bring the character to the MCU?

There are a lot of "what ifs" surrounding the movie, but stranger things have happened than a badly-marketed superhero movie soaring above middling expectations.
