Mulholland Drive is a beautiful film. Mulholand Drive is an outstanding achievement. Mulholland Drive is a true original. And Mulholland Drive is weird. The film was originally meant to be a pilot for a television series but the network rejected it, so Lynch filmed an ending and it was released in cinemas instead. The result is very confusing. The plot would be hard to follow anyway but throw in Lynch's idiosyncratic directing style and penchant for making the audience work for the meaning and what's left is a film that, narratively, doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. Even the actors working on the film were bemused half of the time. Just what exactly is Mulholland Drive about? It's difficult to say. On one hand it's an indictment of the seedy side of Hollywood. Could it also be a film about alternate realities and the power of dreams? Is it a psychodrama? Many fans and critics have posited their own theories as to what the film actually means but that's all they are - theories. Lynch has remained tight-lipped about his intention and doesn't look like revealing it any time soon. The best thing to do is just to go into the film with an open mind and hope you come out of it with your sanity intact. Which other weird cult films were missed? Let us know in the comments below.
