Unlike many films on this list, Todd Solondz's Happiness does not feature surreal imagery, stylised violence or a confusing plot. No, what makes Happiness weird is simply how upfront it is about its subject matter. The film may not be graphic but it certainly is blunt. The most controversial subject that Happiness deals with is paedophilia and it does so in a frank manner. In the film, a young boy is sexually abused by a man (a father himself). This would be shocking enough but when Bill is released on bail he breaks down and confesses to his young son that had abused boys and actually enjoyed it. Happiness deals with this and many other controversial topics. What makes it weird is how matter-of-fact the film is about them.
