4. Using A Time Machine For Extra Credit - The Prisoner Of Azkanban

The time-turner is the object that nearly broke the entire series.

Throughout the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione keeps popping up in classes seemingly out of nowhere to the bemusement of Ron. Then, after the capture of Harry's godfather Sirius Black, she reveals her time-turner, which she has been using to pick up extra classes at one time. It's later used by her and Harry to rescue Buckbeak the Hippogriff and Sirius with little-to-no consequences.

There is so much wrong with this device that it's infuriated the fanbase for over 20 years. After all, this is a portable time-machine that can do irreparable damage to existence itself, and a teacher who should know better gave one of these to a child so she could pick up extra classes.

The turner was written out of future instalments and the catastrophic consequences of time-meddling were shown in full in the Cursed Child stage play. "Awful things happen to wizards that mess with time" says Hermione, yet she is constantly putting reality at risk every time she uses it.
