2. Plot Twist: Gary Oldman Is Asa Butterfield's Dad - The Space Between Us
Don't feel bad if you forgot that this sci-fi tween romance even came out this year: it was near-universally panned and with damn good reason. It didn't know what it wanted to be, the central romance between Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson suffered from their total lack of chemistry, and it had no clear handle on tone whatsoever.
The film concludes with Mars-born teenager Gardner (Butterfield) tracking down his father on Earth, but the man in question insists that he isn't actually his father, but rather his uncle, much to Gardner's disbelief.
Gardner, who will die if he stays in Earth's gravity much longer, collapses outside the house and is resuscitated by Nathaniel (Gary Oldman), the man who took care of him on Mars. It's then revealed that Nathaniel is in fact Gardner's father, having had a secret relationship with Gardner's astronaut mother before she arrived on Mars.
It's a laughable, unearned plot twist that desperately tries to inject the film with some added emotion, but it just doesn't work at all. In a movie already stretching credibility, this revelation extends it well past breaking point.
