15 Worst Movie Performances Of 2019
12. Justice Smith - Detective Pikachu
In 2018, Justice Smith's performance as Franklin Webb in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom fell far too short of expectation. 2019 gave him his chance for redemption in Detective Pikachu, and while he improved on his performance from a year before, he still underwhelmed massively.
Of course, the highlights of Detective Pikachu were always going to be Ryan Reynolds and the pocket monsters themselves, but just because the spotlight wasn't always on Smith doesn't mean he has anywhere to hide. While he was up against a tall task to compete with Reynolds' Pikachu, as a lead actor he completely fell flat.
Without giving Tim any real personality or emotion, the actor failed on his end of the bargain to strike a partnership with Reynolds, instead falling to the annoying sidekick you kinda wish wasn't there. Pretty similar to his role in Jurassic World. Maybe it's just that Smith isn't ready at this point in his career for roles in these huge blockbuster movies. Hopefully his performance in 2020's All The Bright Places will suit him far better.
