15 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Horror Movies

9. Suspiria (2018)

The title card for 2018's Suspiria (a very loose remake of the 1977 Giallo classic of the same name) reads "Six Acts and an Epilogue in a Divided Berlin". That offered a hint to audiences that they were about to watch a pretty out-there work but nevertheless, it's hard to imagine many were prepared for the load of WTFness that followed.

Insane dancing, harrowing outbreaks of violence, terrifying dream sequences, a potent fusion of horror with historical themes, one of the most demented horror movie finales in recent memory and, of course, Tilda Swinton playing an elderly German man - all captured by Luca Guadagnino's idiosyncratic, dazzling direction - made this one of the craziest horror films of the last decade.

It is a gloriously mad swing for the fences in every way imaginable, a film so creative and artistically bold that in spite of its grisly violence, it's really quite beautiful to watch. There's a strong argument to be made that Suspiria is one of the best horror remakes ever, perhaps even better than the already excellent original. Even so, it is an undeniably confrontational and unconventional movie, and it definitely won't be for everyone.
