15 WTF Moments From BAFTAs 2017

5. Dev Patel Wins Best Supporting Actor

Another big surprise came with Dev Patel winning the Best Supporting Actor award for his work in Lion, considering he was up against some incredibly mighty competitors who gave more roundly-acclaimed performances.

Even ignoring the Brit bias, this one really felt like it was Mahershala Ali's (Moonlight) to lose, but with Aaron Taylor-Johnson's (Nocturnal Animals) Golden Globes win, he also seemed like a far safer bet.

Compounding things is the fact that Patel was clearly campaigned in the wrong category: he only appears in half of Lion, but he's unquestionably the lead role, a category where he would've been undeniably destroyed.
