15 WTF Moments From BAFTAs 2017

12. Lion Wins Best Adapted Screenplay

One of the night's early big surprises was Lion taking home the Best Adapted Screenplay BAFTA, its first major screenwriting win of the awards season so far, beating out Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures and Nocturnal Animals.

It's honestly pretty baffling considering that it's one of the weaker scripts of the bunch, with Arrival and Nocturnal Animals in particular being easily superior picks.

Then again, Lion does speak to some very universal ideas about home and family, whereas the two aforementioned films are much more challenging pieces and therefore likely to be more divisive.

Still, don't expect Lion to repeat this at the Oscars, especially with Moonlight in the field.
