Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that it barely feels like Max Rockatansky is the protagonist at all. Easily the best performance in the movie is Charlize Theron's as Furiosa, and it's little surprise given how much more development and actual agency her character has than Max. Granted, this is no bad thing, even if misguided "men's rights activists" have already taken to deriding the movie's "feminist agenda", but it's just a surprise given the movie's title. Furiosa isn't quite a stealth protagonist, but she's not too far off either, given that Max spends a lot of the movie chained up, while Furiosa carries out much of the dirty work, particularly killing Joe at the climax. Needless to say, with the tentative sequel already titled as Mad Max: Furiosa, Theron will be back in the driver's seat soon enough (if Fury Road grosses enough), and it'll be interesting to see how the Max-Furiosa dynamic evolves. Have you seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet? What do you make of it? Shout it out in the comments!
