15 WTF Moments From Mad Max: Fury Road

15. The Insane Sand Storm Sequence

At the start of the movie, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) has gone rogue, taking her War Rig and making off with Immortan Joe's (Hugh Keays-Byrne) five "wives", causing Joe and his massive convoy to give chase. In an attempt to shake them off, however, Furiosa drives directly into a sandstorm, resulting in a gloriously chaotic sequence in which many of Joe's men are flung into the air and either killed by the fall or by their exploding car, which also happens to be in mid-air. The sequence ends with Nux (Nicholas Hoult), who has Max (Tom Hardy) as a reluctant passenger, attempting to blow up his own car in a suicide attack to stop the Rig. Max manages to free himself and stop Nux from setting himself alight, but the car crashes anyway, bringing the mayhem to a (very temporary) end. For all the praise George Miller has gotten for staging scenes with practical stunt-work, this early set-piece is fantastic because it does the opposite: it shows how to efficiently use CGI for something which can never be done for real, and it looks eye-meltingly gorgeous.
