14. James Marsden - X-Men/Superman Returns

James Marsden's career is a tale of near-misses and missed potential, and had his appearances in comic book movies been only slightly different, he might have been considered a far more bankable actor than he currently is. As Cyclops in Bryan Singer's X-Men movies, Marsden was very well cast, but he found himself somewhat marginalised, even despite the character's continued importance in the source as a leader of Xavier's mutants, thanks to the presence of the cooler, gruffer Wolverine. As a result, when Singer left the franchise, Marsden's fall from grace was complete, and he was turned into a bit of a douche whose explosive death was far from unwelcome. Ultimately Singer has revived him, but only as a nod to the importance of the character, as it is surely unlikely he will return for Apocalypse. What is less likely is that Marsden will return to the Superman franchise, after his Richard White went down with the ship that was Superman Returns.
