Critical Consensus: Content to coast on jump scares rather than tap into its story's creepy potential, The Curse of La Llorona arrives in theaters already broken.

This Conjuring Universe movie has received mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike and it's not entirely clear why.

Honestly, what is so bad about The Curse of La Llorona? Sure, it's forgettable and it's weaker than 2019's pleasantly surprising Annabelle Comes Home but it isn’t that bad either. It’s a perfectly entertaining and competently made ghost story that’s backed up by a decent cast and an interesting villain.

The main criticism is that this used jump scares far too much and that is certainly true, but many of these scares are perfectly good as jump scares go, so while the film coasts along on them too much, that doesn’t mean it isn’t an intense movie. It won’t linger or anything, but it should prove a reasonable jolter while you’re watching it.

Hey, at least it’s better than Annabelle (2014) and, worse still, The Nun.
