10. Quicksilver Lives

So far, Joss Whedon is the only director in the MCU to meaningfully kill anyone (villains don't count and nor do faceless civilians), and rumour has it he wanted to flex his usual killer instinct muscles in the Avengers but was shot down.

Then when it came to the sequel, Whedon's vision was of a war movie and as such, it would be disingeuous for no characters to die. He settled on Quicksilver. But he also knew his audience (and his pay-masters) and actually filmed an alternate ending that saw Quicksilver survive, thanks to a rapid healing factor and join the Avengers in a new costume at the end.

Why It Was Cut

It turns out he over-estimated Disney and Marvel's commitment to not killing anyone, and the studio were fine. Whedon didn't want it in the film, and since the studio agreed with him, it was redundant to rake over the material any more.
