16 Deleted Comic Book Movie Scenes You're Not Allowed To See

9. Send In The Clones - Judge Dredd

Given how excellent the R-Rated Dredd reboot was - and how appropriately the violence matched the comic book origins of the character - it sounds plain odd that anyone thought it would work as a PG-13 action movie.

And even with Rob Schneider involved and Sylvester Stallone making sure the character was mostly unrecognisable beyond the name and uniform, the 1995 adaptation was still just too grown-up for the MPAA. First it was rated NC-17, then after five rounds of cuts it managed to get down to R, but then Stallone decided it needed to be funny, rather than dark and true to the source, so even more cuts were made to accommodate a more family-friendly tone.

The most famous cut came in the shape of an attack scene starring the clones of Dredd's brother Rico. In the final film we do see them wake up, but the film initially had them attacking in slow waves and being shot in a shower of goo by Dredd.

Why It Was Cut

It was just too adult, and didn't fit with the studios attempts to pass with a PG-13 rating. The scene actually made it into the comic book adaptation of the film, but that's the only place you can see it, probably because the effects team were none too proud of their chewing gum monsters they'd made.

Nobody's likely to restore it given how comically criticised Judge Dredd still is.
