Nothing at all.

In fairness this Brian Wilson biopic was overlooked by many others as well as the Academy but even so, so was The Hurt Locker and so were many other Oscar nominees. It first premiered at film festivals in 2014 before being released properly in 2015, but whichever ceremony could have honored it, it should've been included. After all, it's got not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 Oscar-worthy performances in it.

These include Paul Dano as the young Brian Wilson, John Cusack as the older Brian Wilson, Paul Giamatti as an abusive therapist looking after the older Wilson and Elizabeth Banks as the older WIlson's love interest.

All four of these fantastic performances threaten to steal the show from each other. Both actors playing Brian Wilson put across an enormously compelling and emotional depiction of mental illness, while Elizabeth Banks is a true revelation. This film cements her as an underrated talent, even if she did direct part of Movie 43.

However, it's arguably the ever-fantastic Paul Giamatti who steals the show with his sinister and brilliantly hateful performance. It's a huge shame that despite being one of the best character actors around hes never had much success at the Oscars. All 4 of them were worthy of nominations and it really is a huge shame that an Oscar-Bait movie that was actually really good got completely ignored.
