Nothing.

Alright, alright, this was always a long shot. After all, it is just a small British independent film. But hey, no-one can blame a man for dreaming. Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, Moonlight and Spotlight were all indie movies that received major Academy acclaim and 2 of those won the big prize. If they can get so much Academy acclaim, other small films should be able to as well.

It seems that unless they're Oscar-Bait movies like Darkest Hour, British films never manage to get awards attention (outside of the BAFTAS anyway). And Lady Macbeth is one of the most unjustly ignored British films of recent years.

No matter what wins Best Picture on March 4th, Lady Macbeth is the best film of 2017. A near-faultless five-star film, this really is an incredible watch. In terms of great acting, powerful story-telling and masterful use of the film medium, this is the film of the year. Its gripping and deliciously dark story is conveyed superbly with a few actors, a couple of locations and minimal dialogue in only 90 minutes, and for that alone it deserves recognition.

Nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Actress for Florence Pugh's brilliant performance should have been guaranteed.
