16 Great Recent Movies The Oscars Outrageously Snubbed

8. Nightcrawler

Drive Ryan Gosling
Open Road Films

Nominated For:

Best Original Screenplay, which it lost to Birdman.

This is another one where it's not clear why it got left out. Probably because it's so dark, disturbing and nihilistic or some stupid reason like that. Anyhow, this was one of the most popular films of 2014 and everyone was hoping against hope that this would score big at the Oscars, but it got a single nomination and that was it.

Nightcrawler definitely deserved nods for Best Picture and Best Cinematography, but the worst thing of all was Jake Gyllenhaal being snubbed for Best Actor. Without Gyllenhaal's transformative and terrifying performance as Lou Bloom - a character so horrible he'll make your skin crawl- the film wouldn't have worked as well.

There wasn't any performance people wanted to get nominated more. In general, this just needed more Academy attention given how effective, how disturbing and how chillingly relevant this film really is.

There were a fair few problems with the 87th Academy Awards, especially in the Best Picture field: American Sniper, which no-one actually liked that much. The Imitation Game, a routine biopic which misrepresented its subject and downplayed the most important part of his story. Whiplash, an obnoxious and one-note drama which just featured people shouting.

And worst of all, The Theory of Everything, a biopic so wet and tedious that it's embarrassing that it was nominated for anything. All of those forgettable movies, but not this? Make no mistake, Nightcrawler was robbed.
